A garage gym in a Utah winter

Northern Utah winters turn an unheated garage into a cold room for months. Training is still possible; it takes a heater used safely, a longer warm-up and a little care for the gear.

COLD GARAGE, DRY AIR
Fig. 1 A cold garage gym: warm the body, not the whole room.

Short answer

Warm yourself, not the whole garage: dress in layers, warm up longer, and use a garage rated heater pointed at the training spot, following the maker’s clearance and ventilation rules. Protect the gear: wipe bars after sessions, keep a light coat of oil on bare steel, and keep chalk and cardio machine electronics dry.

Look after the gear

Winter care (general guidance; your manuals come first)

GearWinter care
BarbellsWipe after use, brush the knurling, light oil on bare steel
Iron plates and dumbbellsKeep off the bare slab; wipe off melt water
Rubber matsStiffer in the cold; lay and trim them on a warmer day
Rowers and bikesCheck the manual for storage temperatures; let a cold monitor warm up
Chalk and bandsKeep dry, in a sealed bin

Moisture and melt

A car brings snow and road salt into the garage. Keep the gym side away from the drip zone, and dry the slab before it reaches the mats. A dehumidifier helps in a closed garage where condensation forms on metal.

Questions people ask

Is it safe to use a heater in a garage gym?

Use a heater rated for garage use and follow its manual on clearances from walls, mats and equipment, and on ventilation, especially for fuel burning heaters. Never leave it running unattended, and install a carbon monoxide alarm if you burn fuel.

Does cold damage gym equipment?

Steel and iron are fine. Watch for condensation when warm, moist air meets cold metal, which can lead to rust. Rubber gets stiffer when cold. Check cardio machine manuals for storage temperature limits on electronics.

How do I keep a barbell from rusting in the garage?

Wipe it down after sessions, brush the knurling, and add a light coat of oil to bare steel now and then. Store it on a rack, not on a damp floor.
