Home gym builder: what to buy, in order

Most home gyms start with too much of the wrong gear. Answer five questions and get a short list in the order to buy it, with the checks that stop a rack from hitting the ceiling.

YOUR KIT LIST
Fig. 1 Space, ceiling, goal, stage and noise go in; a kit list in buying order comes out.

Short answer

For a garage or basement with room for a barbell, start with five things: a rack or squat stand, a 20 kg barbell, bumper plates with collars, a flat bench and 3/4 inch rubber stall mats. For an apartment corner, swap the rack and bar for adjustable dumbbells, a bench and a pull-up bar. Add cardio and extras once the core kit gets used.

How the builder decides

  1. Space sets the core. A garage bay, two car garage or basement room gets a barbell setup. An apartment corner gets dumbbells, because a 7 foot bar and a rack rarely fit one.
  2. Ceiling height picks the rack. Under 90 inches it suggests a short rack or stand; in a single garage bay it suggests a folding wall rack so the car still fits.
  3. Noise changes the cardio. With shared walls or floors it leans to a quiet indoor cycling bike over a fan bike or rower.
  4. Stage trims the list. Starter shows the first purchases only. Starter plus and Full gym add dumbbells, kettlebells, cardio and extras.

Questions people ask

Why does the builder start with a rack and a barbell?

One bar with plates covers squats, deadlifts, presses and rows, and a rack with safeties lets you train heavy alone. Most other gear adds variety on top of that core.

What if my ceiling is low?

Under about 7 feet 6 inches, the builder points to a short rack or squat stand (Titan lists one model at 73.5 inches) and suggests pressing overhead outside the rack or seated.

Does the builder show prices?

No. Prices change daily, and the right budget depends on whether you buy used. Shop buttons open current Amazon listings, and the Utah pages list stores and marketplaces for used gear.

Does it save my answers?

No. It runs in your browser and stores nothing.
